Volunteer Opportunities

posted Oct 15, 2010, 10:49 AM by Web Master   [ updated Oct 15, 2010, 10:49 AM ]

Hello,
I hope that the semester is going well for you!  I am writing to let you know about two volunteer opportunities that might work well with your schedule.
1.       Tenants in Foreclosure

Great opportunity to get directly involved in the community! Law student volunteers needed to educate and inform Hennepin County renters in foreclosed properties of their rights. A door-knocking campaign across the county will take place November 3rd through November 5th, from 5pm to 8pm in the evening.

Students will be trained on canvassing and substantive mortgage law before being teamed up with other students and sent into the field with detailed maps. Students may volunteer for one, two, or all three evenings. A mandatory training session will occur from 4pm to 5pm on November 1st at the University of St. Thomas Law School.

2.       Election Protection
Volunteers will be asked to sign-up for a 4-5 hour shift on Election Day (November 2) either answering calls from voters at a call center (which will be held at Dorsey & Whitney’s offices in downtown Minneapolis) or visiting polling places (paired with a volunteer attorney) to assist voters and monitor the election process for irregularities.

Volunteers will attend a 90 minute training on election law. There are two trainings available:
October 20 11:00am - 1:00pm, Dorsey & Whitney, Suite 1500, 50 S. 6th St., Minneapolis
October 23 10:00 am -12:00 pm, William Mitchell College of Law, Room 125, 875 Summit Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55105
Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in either of these opportunities, or if you would like more information about them.
I am very happy to meet and talk with you about finding other volunteer opportunities that will work well with your schedule.  If it is not convenient for you to come to my office during the week, I am also happy to arrange a time to talk over the phone.
Thank you,
Sara

Friday Night Bar Reviews!

posted Oct 3, 2010, 5:20 PM by Membership Committee   [ updated Oct 3, 2010, 5:26 PM by Web Master ]

The Social Committee has set aside one week a month to have the weekly bar review on a Friday night at 8pm instead of a Thursday night at 9pm to accommodate those students who have early Friday mornings or who travel in for the weekend.

Bar Reviews are a great opportunity to network and socialize with your schoolmates! Stop by, have a Cherry Coke or a beer, relax and enjoy getting to know your classmates outside of the classroom. Each week rotates to a different location, most locations are in St Paul though occasionally jaunt to Minneapolis.

Next Bar Review is October 15th at Half Time Rec (http://www.halftimerec.net). Check out the calendar for information about future bar reviews!

Loan Advances for Books

posted Jul 28, 2010, 11:53 AM by Membership Committee   [ updated Jul 28, 2010, 1:13 PM by Web Master ]

Student Accounts Office decided to begin giving loan advances to weekend law students beginning on Monday, August 2, 2010.

If you receive loans or scholarships to your Hamline account that will have a surplus beyond tuition and fees, you are eligible to receive an advance on the balance dispursement to purchase books. You do have to show up in person to the Cashier's Office and Financial Aid Office, then, once they have verified your account, you can receive up to $500 (you can request less) to purchase books before the semester begins. The advance is given in cash for your use in purchasing books through whatever source you choose. The advance amount is then accounted for on your Piperline account against the loans/scholarships to be dispersed for the semester. This book advance is available each semester, usually approximately 10 days prior to the start of classes. It is available for this Fall on Aug 2nd for Weekend students and Aug 10th for Weekday students.
